One Room Challenge Fall 2021

Garage Edition

It’s been a while since I last posted. As you all know, we moved at the end of August and getting everything up and running has been a chore to say the least. Life has been hectic with the kids and playing chauffeur but I’m back and rearing to go.

It’s true, I’m back for more fun with the Better Homes and Gardens One Room Challenge. This time around, we are tackling our garage. I chose this space because we still have all of our garage contents in a storage pod and I’ve been wanting to epoxy the floors for a long time now. What better time to do it than now while everything is already cleared out, right?

I am so excited to have a clean and organized space to work in. The plan is to have a multifunctional space, which includes a work area for me and a home gym for the hubs. Our garage is 700 sq ft, so we have MORE than enough space to work with here. I put together a mood board for it so that you can grasp my vision. It’s a garage mood board, it won’t be too exciting but I’m going for dark cabinets, gray flooring, and a black slat wall.

Week one is devoted to clearing out the garage and prepping the floors for the epoxy. I’m finding out first hand, just how labor intensive the floor prep can be. It took me hours just to do the Rustoleum clean & degrease step. Let me explain the process to you below.

Step one:

Apply Rustoleum cleaner/degreaser to concrete floor and let set for 20 minutes. Mist with hose to keep it wet. Scrub with a stiff bristled brush to remove any grease or dust and hose off thoroughly.

Step two:

Concrete Etch. Mix the concrete etch with water in a plastic 2-gallon watering can. Pre-wet the surface using a hose. Remove pooled water with a squeegee or broom to avoid leaving puddles. Spread the etching solution over a 10’x 10’ section of the floor. Allow to stand for 1-2 minutes. Scrub the etch into the surface vigorously with a stiff bristle brush to loosen dust and dirt. While working, keep the entire section wet until it has been completely cleaned and rinsed.

What is concrete etch? It is a citric-acid-based formula that is easy and safe to use, both indoors and outdoors. It works by opening up tiny pores within the concrete to allow for maximum penetration and adhesion.

  • Best solution for water-borne coatings
  • Environmentally friendly, citric-based formula
  • Prevents dangerous acids or fumes; will not harm grass or plants

I think getting the concrete etch done will conclude week one of the one room challenge. I will update you all during week two and fill you in on the rest of the epoxy floor journey!

One Room Challenge | Week 7

Garage Edition

Welcome my friends to week 7 of the One Room Challenge (ORC). I am back on track this week and feeling AMAZING! Since we are pretty close to done with this garage renovation, I’m just going to do an overview of everything that we’ve done over the past seven weeks.

The Motivator

I think the following pictures will explain everything about why I chose to do this space first… I need organization in my garage to have motivation to take on projects, so this was a no brainer for me.

Week 1

Week one of the garage renovation was all about preparation. This week we focused on clearing out the garage and prepping the floor with the cleaner & degreaser, followed by the concrete etch to assist in the epoxy adhesion to the concrete.

Week 2

Week two of the garage renovation was all about the concrete repair and epoxy process. I also started painting the walls and storage rack to match, installed most of the cabinets, and installed the Craftsman Versatrack system.

Week 3

Week three was not as productive, but we focused on the details. Here is what happened this week: painted the cabinets, added pulls to the cabinets, installed the end panel, and had my logo installed on the wall!

Week 4

Week four is the half way point and the garage is starting to take shape. This week I tackled cutting a mitered corner on the butcher block counters…. not to mention I free hand cut it with my circular saw. Proud moment for me. Was it perfect? nope! Did it still look good? You bet it did! Wood glue and saw dust were the real heroes! I also started measuring and planning for the PRX performance system.

Week 5

Week five was all about the gym. We got the stringer boards and PRX rack installed as well as mounted the TV and build some shelves to go under it.

Week 6

Week 6 was a bit of a slow down and break kind of a week for me. We did manage to get the gym all tidied up and ready for use though.

Week 7

That leaves us with week seven, phew! I am burnt out at this point. I took on readying the studio apartment above the garage for family to stay this week. So it has just been one project after the other. This week I changed out all of the doorknobs and dead bolts as they were all broken. I also finished installing the trim, used the left over butcher block to build the rest of the shelves under the TV and organized a little.

That leaves us with Week 8

Week eight will be focused on readying the space for photos. I am leaving Wednesday for my dad’s memorial service. So I will need to plan ahead for once in my life, haha. I have had so much fun with everyone participating in the One Room Challenge. I have met some pretty incredible makers and friends through this challenge, and to me, that is what its all about. One Room Challenge | Week 6

Garage Edition

Ladies and gentlemen, please enjoy my awkward pose holding this workout ball. Ha! Just kidding, welcome to week 6 of the ORC! I am slowly getting caught up with the blog part of this. I am all gas and no brakes and getting me to sit down and write about things I’ve done is… well, I’d rather wash dishes πŸ˜‚. Honestly though, if what I’m writing helps even just one person out there, then I’m happy.

Anyways, not much happened this week. I took a mental health break and basically just tidied things up in the garage and got ALL FOUR PODS EMPTIED!!!! I got super motivated to get them out of here after recieving a charge for over $800! Part of the PODS content was all of our gym equipment. We had to call on uncle Tom for his tractor and fork lift attachment to help lift my giant elliptical out of the pod and into the garage.

That wonderful man pictured below… Not my wonderful man, the one on the tractor. He is the engineer that helps me understand everything. He should honestly win an award. He will literally stop whatever he is doing to help whoever is asking. I have never met such a selfless and giving person!

We received the rest of our rubber mats. Josh got those all laid out. I finished organizing all of our little things on the rack wall. I’m not sponsored by any of the brands that I list on my blog, FYI.

Craftsman Verstrack

I bought the rack/slat system from Lowes, the Craftsman Versatrack, and I honestly love it. It has all sorts of accessories available and it was super easy to install. Not to mention, it wasn’t expensive. It was $9.99 for one track. You can buy a kit or purchase one at a time and go at your own pace to keep up with your budget. I would give it a DIY beginners level grade.

One Room Challenge | Week 5

Garage Edition

So, I’m still over here playing catch up. Welcome to week 5 of the ORC (Tomorrow starts week 7😬). Sorry guys, we’ve had lots of family stuff going on and family always comes first in my household. Let’s just dive right in, shall we?

This week was all about the gym side of the garage, and to be honest, I didn’t accomplish all that much this week. But you know what? Progress is progress! I’m taking my time with this so I don’t burn out and never finish.

PRX Performance Rack

One thing that I am super excited about, is our recent squat rack upgrade to the PRX Performance rack. It was a little bit more complicated to install than I anticipated, only because I was limited on where I could (or wanted to) mount it. The support beams have to be precise, otherwise it won’t fold up correctly, or at all. As you can see, we added stringer boards so that the rack could fold up without hitting the garage door opener or the window sill.

Stringer Boards

These stringer boards are 2 x 8, typically stringer boards are 2 x 10, but that wasn’t necessary with this application. With stringer boards, you want to have two bolts or lag screws per stud. In this case, we were installing this over four studs, so we have 8 3.5″ Lag screws per board (I did talk about electrical safety when using anything longer than 2″ screws on my previous post). I did use a spade bit to create the depth I needed for these lag screws to sit flush within the stringer board, so that I could install the PRX support beam over the board.

Support Beam

Once the stringer boards were installed, I used another four 3.5″ Lag screws to attach the support beam to the stringer board and stud. This thing isn’t going anywhere. The support beams can’t be more than 1/4″ off, otherwise this won’t work properly. My anxiety was high with this install, I am by no means a perfectionist when it comes to DIYing, and this required me to be. Now that the support beams are up, we used a plumb bob to ensure that they were perfectly aligned and finished tightening all of the Lag screws down.

Josh took over from here with the PRX installation while I went over and worked on installing the TV wall mount bracket and shelves. I used a 1 x 2 for my support and screwed that into the studs. Then just used what I had left over from my butcher block counters to make some shelves under neath the TV.

There was less than 1/4″ clearance 😳. I wish I could take credit for having perfect planning and measurements but, this was all pure luck! I totally forgot to account for the bracket πŸ€¦πŸ»β€β™€οΈ but luckily it all worked out. How crazy is that?!?

So far, this space is turning out to be pretty awesome for us and I may actually end up using it! πŸ˜… Thanks for joining me here and following along on this renovation. One Room Challenge|Week 4

Garage Edition

Well, week four has already come and gone and I am just now writing up this post for the One Room Challenge. I missed the blog link up but I’ll at least go over what happened 😬. Sometimes life gets loud and crazy over here and the last thing on my mind is sitting down at the computer to write. A lot has happened the past couple of weeks.

Week 4 seemed fairly stagnant but there were some big accomplishments for me. Like, the butcher block countertop that I miter cut! Seriously! I DID THAT! Something I had never done before and kicked butt at, if I do say so myself. Did it go smoothly? Nope. Did I figure it out? You bet I did!

Let’s take a look at what we have accomplished since week three:

  • Cut and installed butcher block countertop
  • Painted and installed kick board
  • Measured and marked where support beams will go for the PRX Performance Squat rack

Let’s talk about the PRX Performance squat rack. The measurements for the support beams can’t be more than 1/4 inch off otherwise they won’t retract properly. So I have been taking my sweet time with this because I have a tendency to rush things to get them done as fast as possible. Once I marked the studs and determined where the beams will need to be installed, I cut holes in the drywall. I used a 3.5″ hole saw for this. Why, you ask? If you recall a few posts back, we talked about electrical code and why you shouldn’t use screws that are longer than 2″.

Holes from hole saw to allow for reaching in to feel for electrical cables that may be running through the stud, rather than down the side of a stud.

I have to use 3.5″ Lag screws for the support beams. So I cut holes into the drywall in between the studs so that I could stick my hand in and feel for any electrical cables that may be running through the stud, rather than down the sides. Fortunately, there weren’t any cables running through where my beams would be installed, so I am in the clear to continue.

And yes, before you attack like the many trolls on Instagram did, the outlets are painted. I used a dry brush to avoid excess paint. This was BEFORE I knew that this could potentially be a fire hazard, even though this has been done by interior designers for decades… The reason it can be a fire hazard is, if paint got in between the prong and the metal contact plate, heat could build up and cause a fire. I know some people are very opinionated about this topic, so lets just remember that this is my home and I prefer for the outlets to not be an eyesore here.

One Room Challenge | Week 3

Garage Edition

Welcome to Week 3 of the Better Homes & Gardens One Room Challenge. For those of you who are new here, I am a guest participant in the One Room Challenge and I am renovating my garage. This week had a slight halt due to Bronchitis, but I’m starting to feel better and kicking it into high gear to accomplish my goals for the week! Goals for the week include:

  • Painting the cabinets
  • Add hardware to cabinets
  • Cut and install countertop
  • Having my logo installed (Already done, refer to above picture!)
  • Install trim
  • Install PRX performance system if arrives in time (Was supposed to be delivered Friday but is delayed now)
  • Finish painting the walls
  • Install End panel, trim, and toe kick on Cabinets

Friday night, I had a burst of energy and got the cabinet end panel cut and installed. You know what’s missing in the image below? Safety gear! This is a good opportunity to chat about what you should be using when working with saws, yes even a jigsaw.

Safety First

  1. Hair should be pulled back
  2. I should be wearing safety goggles, glasses are not sufficient for stopping sawdust or pieces of wood from flying into your eyes
  3. Ear protection
  4. Mask. Seasoned woodworkers would advise you to wear a properly fitted, high efficiency respirator so you can decrease your chances of developing respiratory problems or certain types of cancer.
  5. Fitted clothing (loose fitted clothing can easily become entangled in a power tool
  6. Gloves are used when handling wood but not advised when near rotating blades and other machinery parts where gloves can catch
  7. Protective footwear

Cabinets and Hardware

Then, I finished painting the cabinets and added the hardware. The painting process was easy, as these cabinets were unfinished. I should use a primer but I just used a paint that had paint and primer in one. Believe it or not, I only needed to apply two coats, without a primer and all! I did spray it down with a clear satin polycrylic spray. If you use this product, please be sure to be in a well ventilated area.

There was a slight hiccup with the hardware. Two of the handles weren’t installing level and drove me mad, so I filled in the holes with wood filler and started over. Do you ever have that problem, where you just can’t get it right? It ended up working out, I just had to keep trying.

Don’t worry, I sanded it down and painted over it and you can’t even tell now that I had an oops! Its not a DIY if there isn’t at least one oops involved. Backtracking for a second… Did you see that GIANT sign above?? Southern Oregon Signs made and installed that for me! I promise it looks better in person. Unfortunately for my picture quality, I have a toddler and most of my DIYs happen during nap time and bed time, when low light is an issue. It’s pretty crazy seeing something you created up on the wall like that.Β 

Plan of Attack

I plan on finishing up the painting next so I can get rid of all of these paint trays and drapes and then starting on the trim work. Once the trim work is done, I’ll tackle the countertop. I’ve been waiting for him to have a day off to help me out because its a bit too heavy for me to hold and cut by myself. Plus, with the cabinets being installed on an L shape, I’ll need to make a miter cut, which I’ve never done with counters before. EEK! I’m going to try to make a template first to cut from so if I make a mistake the first time, I’m not ruining an expensive piece.

I’m hoping the PRX gym system arrives before week 4 starts because I was planning on devoting week 4 to my work bench build. I got my plans for this build from my friend Ben, his instagram handle is: @Bens_diy. He has a highlight bubble that shows you step by step, how to build this!

One Room Challenge | Week 2

Fall 21′ Garage Edition

Welcome to Week 2 of the One Room Challenge! I’m a few days late to posting here but there was a lot going on to cover. Let’s start off where we left off, shall we?

So, last week we covered the prep work that goes into epoxying your concrete floors. We left off with the concrete etch and letting the concrete dry, do you remember? If not, that’s okay, just head back to my previous blog post for a refresher! Once the floor is completely dry, you will want to repair any cracks or divots in the concrete. I used the Rustoleum Concrete Patch & Repair kit. This is a two part, industrial strength epoxy that permanently bonds concrete. The product states that it won’t shrink or crack and creates an extremely hard surface that is stronger than concrete. The downside is, you have to wait 8 hours after applying, to paint on the epoxy.

Mixing the Rustoleum Concrete Patch & Repair

Your floor should already be clean, structurally sound, and free of dust, dirt, grease, or oil before starting. Mix the components together at a 2:1 ratio. Mix two parts of Part B BASE with 1 part of Part A ACTIVATOR on a clean, flat piece of cardboard until a uniform gray, putty-like consistency is achieved.

Then, using a putty knife, apply the mixture evenly over cracks and divots. Level and finish to a smooth surface.

Only mix what you will use within 30 minutes. If a second layer is needed for larger repairs, apply 1-2 hours after the first layer. Allow to cure for 8 hours before sanding or painting.

8 hours later….

Finally, we are ready to EPOXY!!! I used the Rustoleum Epoxyshield Garage Floor Coating Kit.

I have to say, Rustoleum made this process pretty fool proof. I went directly to their website for a step-by-step tutorial and I felt very confident with tackling this for the first time.

In the above kit, It comes with two pouches of epoxy. Only mix one at a time because you only have about 1.5 hours to apply it once mixed. Each pouch has a Part A pouch and a Part B pouch with a burst seal dividing the two. Mix each pouch individually for 2-3 minutes prior to bursting the seal.

Once mixed, go ahead and tightly roll one end of the pouch towards the middle seal to burst it into the other end. Mix thoroughly for another 2-3 minutes. Once mixed, cut a corner off of the pouch and pour the contents into a paint tray. Refer to above picture for visual. You may have to wait a certain amount of time before applying it to your concrete, depending on your air temperature. It was about 70 degrees outside when I did this, so I waited the recommended time of 30 minutes. The chart is included in the kit.

TIP: Concrete temperature should not be below 55 degrees or above 90 degrees

Now, stir your epoxy another time, as it has been sitting for (30 minutes in my case). Brush on epoxy to edges working in 4′ x 4′ sections at a time. Be sure to keep a wet edge to avoid brush or roller marks. This may be obvious but I’ll say it anyways: It’s best to work from the back of the garage towards an exit to avoid traffic over your freshly epoxied floors.

After brushing on the edges, use a 9″ lint free woven roller with a 3/8 inch or 3/16 inch nap.

After each 4′ x 4′ section, you can throw your decorative color chips. I did not use this on my floors. My husband and I preferred the look without them. Remember, you only have 1-2 hours to apply the epoxy, depending on your air temp, refer to above chart.

Once your entire floor is covered, let it dry at least 24 hours before applying the clear coat.

24 hours later….

Now we’re ready for our Rustoleum Epoxy Shield Clear coat and anti skid additive if desired. This clear coat kit comes with 1 pouch that is supposed to cover 450-500 soft. My garage is 700 sq ft, so I needed two kits. The pouch is just like the epoxy pouch. There is a part A and a part B that you will once again need to mix individually for 2-3 minutes before bursting the seal. Once mixed, roll towards center to break the seal and mix again for another 2-3 minutes.

Cut a corner off of the pouch and pour it into a paint tray. Pour in the anti-skid additive and mix thoroughly. Roll on with a 9″ lint free woven roller with a 3/8 inch or 3/16 inch nap. Let dry for 12-16 hours before light foot traffic and 72 hours before heavy traffic and drive on.

TIP: The anti skid additive will settle to the bottom of the paint tray, stir mixture between rolling.

Let’s wrap up Week 2 of the ORC

After the floors were finished, I then moved on to painting the walls. Since my flooring option was limited to light gray or tan due to stock issues, this changed up my color scheme. I went with a blue/gray ombre wall.

I started by measuring the height of my wall and then deciding how I wanted to divvy up the colors. My walls are 10 feet, so I had plenty of wall to work with. I initially started off with three colors and then decided I wanted more of a faded effect and got three more colors on the same color swatch. The darkest color that I started with was Tempest Skies by Sherwin Williams.

Blending without brush marks was a bit tricky as you can see above. I ended up diluting slightly with water and blending with my hands. You want enough water to blend without having drips.

Slat Wall…

I ended up buying the Verstrack slat wall system by Craftsman. Each slat can hold a maximum of 75 pounds. It recommended using a #10 machine head screw. I made a mistake here using 3 inch screws… You aren’t supposed to use more than 2 inch screws on your interior walls because of ELECTRICAL wires!! Did you know that electrical wires can run horizontally through the studs??

Per code, electricians are supposed to install wires 1.5 inches from the edge of a stud and if you’re calculating for your drywall (1/2 inch). That would give you a maximum screw length of 2 inches to avoid hitting any wires.

Occasionally, electricians will use a metal plate in between the stud and the drywall to protect the wires (refer to image below). But, this does not always happen, so it is best to never use more than a 2 inch screw.

After I finished installing the slat wall (with my tail tucked between my legs after using 3 inch screws for the whole thing πŸ€¦πŸ»β€β™€οΈ), I installed some cabinets. I got some pretty basic and cheap cabinets from the Home Depot Hamilton Beech unfinished collection. My goal was to get the cabinets installed, painted, and countertop installed before the end of week two, but that may have been a little too ambitious of me. I think we did a huge amount of work during week two and I’m walking away proud of what we accomplished!

To summarize, for week two we:

  • Epoxied the floor and added the clear coat
  • Painted the walls and storage rack to match
  • Installed the Slat wall system
  • Installed cabinets
  • Started organizing

Plans for week 3:

  • Paint Cabinets
  • Install countertop
  • Install cabinet hardware
  • Install PRX Profile Pro rack system

In addition to the above list, I still have to build a bike rack that is safe for a carbon fiber bike, install base boards, build a work bench, and build hanging storage.
